In December 2025, the Kyrene School District governing board voted to close six schools because of falling enrollment. Three elementary schools close for the 2026-27 school year. Kyrene Traditional Academy, Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School and Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School close for 2027-28.

The district says Kyrene de la Paloma will absorb the Kyrene Traditional Academy boundary starting in 2027-28. The two school teams are building a shared plan for the combined school.
